KANSAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE ANNOUNCES 2016-17 BASKETBALL SCHEDULES

School’s first teams in more than a decade will play a wide range of opponents in upcoming season.

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. (April 22, 2016) – Kansas Christian College (KCC) has announced it men’s and women’s basketball schedules for the 2016-17 season. It will be the first time since 2005 that KCC has participated in intercollegiate athletics, previously competing in men’s basketball from 1999 to 2005, and the first time in school history that a women’s team competed for the Falcons. The complete schedule follows this release.

“Announcing our first basketball schedule in more than a decade is tremendously exciting,” said John Janssen, who accepted the position as the KCC athletics director earlier this year. “Ever since we made the announcement that we were reviving the athletics program, there has been a growing excitement among the students and alumni, which has been fun to see. We’re confident that this is going to be a huge plus for our school and community.”

Initially set to compete as part of the Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA), the KCC teams will compete against teams from their own division, as well as those from the NCCAA, NAIA and NCAA Div. II. According to Janssen, the variety of teams on the Falcons’ schedule will give KCC the kind of schedule already played by established small-college basketball programs.

“It will take a while to find our niche, but the best way to do that is to test ourselves against a variety of schools,” said Janssen, who helped schedule early-season games against Emporia State University, which just took home the women’s national title for NCAA Div. II. “By playing schools that are bigger than we are, we’ll not only gauge our own talent level, but we’ll also grow as a team and send a message that we’re willing to accept a challenge.”

The Falcons official regular season opens on October 31 in Sterling, Kan., for both men’s and women’s matchups with the Sterling College Knights, which is followed by the home opener against Union College at KCC’s Cowen Memorial Auditorium on Nov. 1. The regular season concludes on Feb. 20, 2017, at Cowen Memorial for senior night against Ecclesia College.

“We’re definitely sensing a lot of excitement from the KCC community and our alumni,” said Janssen. “It’s been a decade since they had a team to cheer for, and they’re definitely ready. It will be an exciting year.”

KCC’s previous foray into athletics started in 1999 and lasted for six seasons. Competing solely in men’s basketball, the original Falcons experienced their most successful season in 2003, earning a school-record 14 wins. Going up against regional Christian and private colleges within a five-state area, KCC competed in both the ACCA and NCCAA while also taking on select opponents from the NAIA.

More details will be released regarding the KCC athletics department as the season draws closer. In the meantime, those wanting more information are encouraged to visit www.kansaschristian.edu/kcc-athletics or to contact Janssen at (913) 722-0272.
