When Kobe Morgan first heard about Kansas Christian College, it wasn’t because of academics or ministry. It was because of basketball.
“My good friend AJ told me, ‘Hey man, you’re a good player. You should come play at my college,’” Kobe recalls. “I wanted to play basketball in college, maybe even professionally.”
At first, Kobe chose a different route, attending a junior college and trying to walk on to the basketball team. But God had other plans. Through Christian mentors who encouraged him to “focus on something bigger than yourself,” Kobe began to reconsider what really mattered. Then, an unexpected email arrived.
“It said there was a showcase day at KCC,” he said. “And I thought, wait, that’s AJ’s school. I should check it out.”
That visit changed everything.
“Yes, basketball drew me in,” he admits, “but what kept me here was the community, the focus on Christ, and how everything tied back to growing in faith and impacting the world for His Kingdom.”
Finding Faith and Growth
Kobe enrolled at Kansas Christian College, majoring in Business Administration, and graduated in May 2023. Looking back, he describes his experience in three words: fun, growth, and challenge.
“Dorm life, sports, student activities, all of that was so much fun,” he said. “But there was also growth and challenge. Especially during COVID, when everything went online, I had to really rely on my faith and the people around me.”
It was during his time at KCC that Kobe began his walk with Jesus.
“I learned about sin, discipleship, and doing life together,” he said. “That season really grew me, not just as a student, but as a person.”
Learning to Lead and Communicate
From sports to classroom lessons, Kobe says KCC equipped him for life after college.
“I learned how to study the Bible the right way, thanks to Dr. Kommel’s class,” he said. “And I learned the value of hard work from cross country and track. There were mornings I didn’t want to run or do homework, but I learned to stay co
mmitted and lean on the people around me.”
But one lesson in particular continues to pay off every day: public speaking.
“Dr. Kelso’s speech class changed everything,” Kobe said. “He taught me how to prepare, speak confidently, and avoid those filler words like ‘um’ or ‘uh.’”
That training came full circle when Kobe, now working for Ryan Lawn & Tree, was asked to give a presentation on financial awareness to his coworkers.
“I got up there and walked them through the income statement, profitability margins, and ways to improve our business,” he said. “Afterward, people came up to me and said, ‘You were so polished. You never said um once!’”
“I immediately texted Dr. Kelso and told him what happened. That’s how impactful that class was.”
Looking Ahead
Today, Kobe carries the lessons he learned at Kansas Christian College into every part of his life—faith, work, and relationships.
“I learned that it’s okay to admit you can’t do life alone,” he said. “KCC taught me to lean on community, to grow through challenge, and to live out my faith boldly.”
Kobe and his wife, Naomi, another KCC Alumna, have just moved to Florida with their family to continue the process of becoming an owner-operator of a Chick-fil-A under the guideance of one of Kobe’s mentors.
Located in Overland Park, Kansas, Kansas Christian College (KCC) equips students to become servant leaders who integrate faith, learning, and purpose. With a close community, Christ-centered academics, and competitive athletics, KCC offers an environment where students like Kobe can grow both spiritually and personally.
