Finding the right college isn’t easy. For many students in the Kansas City area, the decision involves more than academics and cost. It includes questions like Where will I belong? Who will I become? Will I grow spiritually as well as personally?
For Desmond, a sophomore at Kansas Christian College in Overland Park, Kansas, those questions became clear the moment he stepped onto campus. What he discovered wasn’t just a degree program. It was a community where faith is lived out, relationships matter, and students are encouraged to pursue a deeper calling.
A Welcoming Community in the Heart of Kansas City#
Desmond grew up attending Overland Christian Schools, located next door to KCC. He knew the name, but it wasn’t until he toured the campus that everything fell into place.
“I felt at home immediately,” Desmond explained. “The environment was welcoming. Every tour, every visit, every conversation made me feel like I belonged here.”
Unlike many larger universities in Kansas and the Midwest, KCC offers a close-knit community where students frequently connect with professors, staff, and one another. Faith isn’t an afterthought; it’s woven into campus life.
Choosing a College Where Faith Matters#
When Desmond compared KCC to other colleges he considered throughout the Kansas City region, he noticed something different.
“At other schools, you don’t see open worship, prayer, or conversations about God,” he said. “I knew I wanted to be in a Christian environment.”
Through chapel services, Bible studies, mission opportunities, and hallway conversations, Desmond discovered a place where expressing his faith felt natural instead of awkward. He found mentors who cared about his spiritual development just as much as his academic success.
A Moment With the President That Changed Everything#
One defining moment came after a chapel service during an altar call. Unsure of what he was processing internally, Desmond went forward, and something unexpected happened.
“President Dr. Chad Pollard came up and prayed with me,” he shared. “He didn’t feel like some distant leader. He was just a person caring about another person.”
For Desmond, that experience demonstrated what makes Kansas Christian College unique. Leaders don’t lead from a distance. They walk with students, pray with students, and take time to listen.
How Scholarships Made College Possible#
College affordability is a major concern for students across Kansas City, Overland Park, and Johnson County. Scholarships played a huge role in making KCC accessible for Desmond.
“As a student athlete, life gets busy. Scholarships helped bring the cost down and made it possible for me to be here,” he said.
Combined with small class sizes, personal support, and flexible pathways, students at KCC often find that their college education is more affordable than they expected.
A Life-Changing Missions Trip to Costa Rica#
One of Desmond’s most impactful experiences at KCC was traveling to Costa Rica on a school mission trip.
There, he saw a different side of Dr. Pollard.
“He was always in a suit on campus, but on that trip, he was working hard, physically, mentally, spiritually, right alongside us,” Desmond said. “He even skipped lunch and water breaks so he could keep helping.”
Watching the president serve others with such humility reshaped Desmond’s view of leadership. It showed him what it looks like when someone prioritizes others over themselves and lives out Christlike service.
Students at KCC Are Hungry to Grow#
Another thing that stood out to Desmond is the spiritual hunger he sees among KCC students.
“At other colleges, it’s rare to find small groups or Bible studies,” he said. “Here, students want to grow. They want to learn. They want to get closer to God.”
From weekly Bible studies in the Watkins Memorial Library to prayer gatherings behind the Stone House, faith isn’t just encouraged, it’s lived out daily.
Discovering His Calling and Purpose#
Like many students across the Kansas City metro area, Desmond came to college primarily focused on career paths and degree programs. But KCC helped him see something deeper.
“There’s a big emphasis here on advancing God’s kingdom,” he said. “Hearing testimonies and worshiping in chapel opened my eyes. Life isn’t just about making money. It’s about sharing the gospel and using your life for something bigger.”
That clarity and purpose are part of what make KCC so transformational.
