For many high school students across the Midwest, choosing the right Christian college can feel overwhelming. But for Quintin Sewell, an Early Education major from a small town in Arkansas, the path to Kansas Christian College in Overland Park, Kansas, became clear the moment he stepped on campus. Quintin’s story reflects what makes KCC special: community, spiritual growth, leadership development, and a place where students are truly known.
Discovering KCC at the Right Time#
Quintin first heard about Kansas Christian College during a season of uncertainty. “I was trying to figure out what I was going to do after high school,” he shared. “I loved basketbal,l and I didn’t know how I wanted to continue that dream down the line.” After being recruited by the KCC basketball coach and attending a Preview Day, everything fell into place. “Through a few talks and through a preview day, I eventually signed to come here to play basketball,” Quintin said.
A Campus That Feels Like Home#
Coming from a small Arkansas town, Quintin immediately noticed something familiar about KCC. “I’m from a little town in Arkansas where everybody knows everybody, and it’s the same feeling here,” he said. “Everybody knows you—from the teacher to the other students to the president.” That sense of connection helped him settle in, even when it didn’t feel easy at first. “When I first got here, I was a very shy kid,” Quintin admitted. “I felt kind of a little bit of an outcast… that I didn’t feel like I fit in because of where I was from.” But the community he found changed everything. “Through getting to know all the teachers and more students, I was able to be more outgoing and who I actually am.”
Spiritual Growth Through Chapel#
One of the most defining moments in Quintin’s college journey came during chapel. “One time in chapel, Mr. Lee was preaching about leadership… about how we need to not just stay where we’re at, but grow through what the Lord wants us to do,” he remembered. The message challenged him to trust God even when the path felt uncertain. “Sometimes you do need to just maybe do it afraid,” Quintin said. “I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen, but I’m going to trust the Lord and trust that He has my back through everything.”
Scholarships That Make a Difference#
Affordability was another key factor that made KCC possible for Quintin. “The role of scholarships at KCC has played a tremendous part in my being here,” he explained. “Basketball scholarships, being on the student leadership team, academic scholarships, even being the male RA… all of it has really helped me learn not just about life, but how to be a better Christian.”
Mentorship That Shapes Leaders#
In addition to professors and coaches, KCC staff members played a meaningful role in Quintin’s growth—especially his Housing Director, Jarrod. “He’s helped me come out of my shell and show who I really am,” Quintin shared. “He helped me make connections not just with people from the basketball team, but from different sports and different walks of life.”
